Appropriately named House on the Cliff, this structure was designed by Madrid architectural firm GilBartolomé Architects for a couple who bought a hillside plot with a 42-degree inclination. The two-story house, which is largely buried in the ground and covered by an undulating zinc-clad roof, was completed in 2015. It is in the Spanish province of Grenada and overlooks the Mediterranean Sea.
The subterranean construction allows the house to benefit from the location’s constant ground temperature—around 67 degrees all year. A large split-level living area opens onto a cantilevered terrace with a swimming pool on the lower level, while three bedrooms on the second floor take in sea views though dormer windows and glass balconies.
The fiberglass and polyester-resin furniture were also designed by the architects—using digital software but handmade on site.
